Watchmen an Super Heroes
Mar. 22nd, 2009 09:53 amLast week Pinky and I went out for a long awaited for date night. We went to see Watchmen.Let me say upfront that I hated the comic book. Never have I read something that filled me with such despair and bleak hopelssness. Some days it was a struggle just to open the pages and read one or two before havng to put it down. "Why then did you bother to keep reading"? You may very well ask. Well first because I told
tedivm I would, second because no graphic novel is going to defeat me and third and mostly because it was obvious to me that this book had touched a chord in a great many people and I wanted to find out why. The more I read, the more down a neverending pit of despair I fell the more I wanted to know why this had such appeal. Why are these the superheroes of today? What inside of us are they speaking to?
Having said that I loved the movie. It was the movie the Dark Knight wanted to be but failed miserably.
It did, however , raise more questions in me than before. Why did we cheer while these "heroes" killed people and spread just as much destruction as their "evil" counterparts? Why are Heoes like Superman looked at as comical, flat, two dimensional? Do we no longer believe in the power of good for good's sake? Must even those larger than life people we put on the hero pedistal have feet of clay? Why - instead of aspiring to be Gods do we now want our Gods to be Human?
